“How do students experience our teaching, and what is missing?”
The project
The institute wants its teaching to follow the principle it applies in its projects with companies: start with the users and their needs. The institute’s project to redesign its teaching therefore goes beyond satisfaction. It asks why something works well and why something else does not. What would have to change? And how do different students actually experience lectures, materials and exam preparation?
To answer these questions, Zeitgeist Labs is developing a mixed-methods approach that adds qualitative depth and further evidence to conventional evaluation. In conversations with an AI interviewer, held in several languages, students can say freely what helps them, what is missing and what they would change. The systems behind the conversations know the TIM institute, the curriculum and the content of each course. International students can answer in whichever language lets them describe their experience most precisely.
The Intelligence Dashboard brings these voices together with existing evaluation data and relevant research evidence on how to design teaching. The institute can look at patterns and differences between groups, put its own questions to the whole dataset and test new ideas against the evidence it already has. A one-off evaluation becomes a lasting knowledge base for better teaching.
Standard evaluation forms do not get us anywhere on the questions that really matter. They tell us that something works well or badly, but almost never why. With Zeitgeist Labs, students can describe at length how they actually experience our teaching and exam preparation, in their first language if they wish. We would not have captured that otherwise. In the dashboard we can keep exploring what they said and test new ideas against our students’ own voices. This approach has considerably improved the way we develop our teaching.
